Film The Fountain (2006) plunges one into a psychic world

Starting with a puzzling start and taking you to the psyche of a researcher whose wife has an incurable tumor, the Fountain is a worthwhile film that gives you a spiritual realization of life and death. Yet I have to correct a wrong done by many. It does not fit into the science fiction but rather the fantasy genre. Here I say fantasy not in the sense of Lord of the Rings Trilogy or the latest 300. Fantasy like in the Labyrinth or Eternal Sunshine of A Spotless Mind. They mix reality with an hyper-reality. The truth has a parallel but limitless reflection on this hyper-reality. So when you watch Fountain, starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz, you experience a two-fold story, one in İzzi's novel where the Spanish Conquistador goes in search of a tree whose balm gives eternal life and the other in real life where her husband devotes his time to find a cure to her illness. In either way this is a story of Dr. Faustus asking for an immortal kiss. I wont tell the end to take the joy …

One of my poems after Sufi ideal of "Die before you die!"

Nightfall II

Your imperial palace of musty corridors, your second self,
Inch by inch the movement of your eyes
Dies before you die…
A fountain decked with peacock feathers, flowing with transparent envy
Rather than water for your thirsty brother who
Dies before you die…
The chamber you put fire to, is decorated with gilded mirrors
Their gold brighter than the fire, they extinguish yours, the last smile
Dies before you die.
Death on his familiar torso projects like the tower of Babel
Over you, over him; brothers, same blood makes awkward enemies
Who die before you die…
The sizzling meat of your body, from either joy or agony.
Live like a rooster among yellow off-spring, be a single eye on a peafowl’s tail
and die before the nightfall .

Huo Yuan Jia (2006) - Fearless

I think so far the best movie Jet Li starred in. I am not a big fan of fighting and combat films yet the Fearless was really impressive in representing the Chinese Kung Fu master Huo Yuan Jia's half-mythical half-true lifestory. This is one of my best historical movies along with the Gladiator (2000), the Kingdom of Heaven(2005) and the Message (1976).
I think it is high time there comes a movie about the Ottoman Mehmed the Conqueror and his siege of Istanbul. We are waiting for those genius Turkish screenwriters and producers who will make a worthy historical film about one of the most significant events in the Early Modern World.

Necip Fazıl Kısakurek'ten Bir Ceviri- Translation of Necip Fazil's Donemec

Dönemeç / Necip Fazıl Kısakürek
Bir gündü, hava ılık
Ve cadde kalabalık...
Bir kadın sapıverdi önümden dönemece;
Yalnız bir endam gördüm, arkasından, ipince.
Ve görmeden sevdiğim, işte bu kadın dedim,
Çarpıldım sendeledim.

Bir gündü mevsim bayat
Ve esnemekte hayat....
Dönemeçten bir tabut çıktı ve üç beş adam;
Yalnız bir âhenk sezdim, çerçevede bir endam.
Ve tabutta, incecik, o kadın var, anladım;
Bir köşede ağladım

Curve
It was a day, a warm day
and the street swarmed.
A woman took a turn right before me
I only saw her slender figure from the back
And without coming eye to eye I fell for her,
This is the woman I love I said
I twisted to the side and staggered.

It was a day, flat season
and a sucking life…
From the corner came a coffin and three to five men
I recognized an accord in it,
a familiar figure laid in that mounting
So they had my woman in the casket
I twisted to the side and cried.

Great Site For Booklovers!

www.librarything.com is a brand new database where you can register for free and add up to 200 books in your personal library. The site is a great vista for booklovers, critics and a way to find a new book to read in the light of your former reading. What's more librarything enables you to connect to many worldwide libraries' databases and search for books in other languages. Turkish is one of them. Up until now only the Bilkent University Library has added its database to the system but I think with the growing number of interest in the project it will be one of the largest library database of the world.
